5 ways electronics are ruining your health

If you are reading this you are probably a millennial. We as a generation have given way to hedonism in ways you can never even imagine. Our generation is also hooked to our gadgets and electronics, no matter what these can be. We are always looking downwards at our phones, looking at our televisions (if you still watch these) and we are also fond of our displays and infotainment systems of our cars. We are basically deeply entrenched in the electronic ecosystem in multiple ways and going away from these will be akin to going off-grid. This is affecting our health considerably and we are going to tell five ways of how these electronics are doing it. See below for this information. Here are 5 ways electronics are ruining your health:

  1. It is destroying our normal stature

These electronics’ major contribution to our health is negatively correlated. You probably knew this but you did not know how your favorite electronics do it. Our stature is to stand upright with our backs naturally straight. With our eyes on our mobiles or on some other type of screen we are always bending our neck and sometimes our back in a slouched shape. Due to this, our spinal cords (the main bone in our back and neck) can become a slouch shape.

After sometime we tend to lose the natural curvature of our spine if continuously slouch. Consequently, we slouch naturally even while we are trying to stand upright but cannot do so just because we were always slouching to use our electronics. Therefore, if taken to the extremes, usage like this can lead to spinal abnormalities and disorders.

  1. It is affecting our sleep

The blue light our screens have, has ways of disrupting our sleep through disrupting our brains’ chemicals/hormones and interrupting our normal brain functioning. It is the blue light of death (more on this later) and sleep is no stranger to its negative effects. Screens disrupt our melatonin levels (Harvard Medical School, 2019) affecting our brain in the process. Melatonin is the hormone responsible for regulating our normal sleep cycle (the circadian rhythm). This leads to us to stay glued to our screens (reinforcement of habit) and we lose the ability to focus and store information the very next day. The disruption of sleep means our circadian rhythm, which is our 24-hour living cycle (including sleep) also comes under fire.

  1. Excessive screen time can also lead to mortifying ailments

Minimal REM sleep (deepest form of our sleep) due excessive sleep time leads to a boost in anxiety, stress, higher risk of PTSD and fatigue. Additionally it can also lead to an higher risk of developing cardiovascular and cancerous diseases while also forming a high risk of diabetes and obesity. Usually these are the result of screen time’s interference with normal sleep. The light emitting from your electronics is the blue light of death, which can slowly kill you.

  1. Neck or shoulder strain, especially in children

5 ways electronics are ruining your health It is literally consequential for children.
We humans cannot lay in bed all night long. We should not stream movies on screens of mobiles (even on our laptops or computers) all night. Strain in neck or shoulder is a lot more common when you are using laptops or tablets . These can make you slouch much more than other electronics. It is literally consequential for children.

  1. Eye Strain

Eye strain is common when it comes to using your screens (any kind) excessively. But did you know usage which is excessive can lead to much more critical and underlying problems that you never had an idea about. Weaker eyes can give way to problems like burning sensation around the eyes or something more serious like myopia.

        Conclusion

We need to take breaks from our excessive use of screens attached to different electronics. Not putting a stop to this type of excessive use usually leads to problematic consequences which hinder good health.
